Smithsonian Institution, Sant Ocean Initiative

Challenge:
Make the top marine education in the country accessible to a broad audience of museum goers and the general public, and keep it current through an online portal and in-museum kiosk.

Solution:
e3 Strategies assessed the marketplace to evaluate how marine science institutions, aquariums, and educational venues across the world develop and share similar educational content. We determined the need to collaborate with other organizations to continuously generate and share content. To connect with such a broad audience, e3 Strategies championed employing a contemporary magazine-style tone that would appeal to today’s museum-goers. We then piloted the use of this new style in a web site devoted to explaining how the spectacular, new Sant Ocean Hall was designed and constructed.

Within the museum, a dynamic, interactive kiosk invites visitors to explore ocean imagery, sounds, and video clips at the museum. A partnership with the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) makes the Ocean Today kiosk and its associated content available to museums and aquariums across the United States. Each evening, the Ocean Today kiosks automatically receive updates from collaborators across the country.
