Case Study

Client:
National Wildlife Federation (NWF)

Challenge:
Create online learning programs to recruit, train, and certify volunteers to lead community education events. In addition, the online learning program would engage the general public to increase awareness of actions to help wildlife, endangered species, and imperiled ecosystems.

Solution:
We created an educational portal called Wildlife University™ to provide self-directed, online learning experiences incorporating multimedia, guest speakers, and offline projects to engage and teach participants. We worked with experts at National Wildlife Federation to adapt both scientific and public policy information into learning activities that appealed to the general public. By building interactive quizzes and offline projects into the user experience, our strategies reinforced learning while simultaneously measuring the effectiveness of the curriculum.

Wildlife University exceeded its goal of attracting 5,000 people to get involved; ultimately training over 7,500 volunteers, employees, and new participants in one year. At the same time, National Wildlife Federation decreased infrastructure costs by 50%. Ongoing evaluation indicated the start of new conservation practices among Wildlife University participants, in both individual daily life and within their communities.

“Stephanie Eskins Gleason’s work facilitated our ‘train the trainer’ model, which allowed us to reach volunteers who otherwise would not have received the in-depth training to mobilize people in their areas. The ability for National Wildlife Federation to evaluate the competencies of volunteers was huge for the organization, and we could see the impact it had on individuals and communities nation-wide."
